Preparing for Tiferet

GETTING READY FOR YOUR YEAR IN ISRAEL

Tuition Assistance

Tiferet has a limited amount of tuition assistance available for qualified incoming students. Please contact us early to determine your eligibility.

Students and their parents who need financial assistance in order to satisfy their tuition and other expenses of their year in Israel should also discuss possible sources with their high school’s Israel advisor and financial aid director, well in advance of applying to any Israel program.

ATTENDING TIFERET THROUGH JOINT - PROGRAMS OF STERN COLLEGE/YU OR TOURO COLLEGE

Tiferet is proud to be part of 2 college-affiliated joint programs which grant one-year of college credits: The S. Daniel Abraham Israel Program at Yeshiva University (Stern College) http://yu.edu/jip/ and the Touro College Israel Option http://www.touro.edu/las/programs/Israel/.

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES: You must apply for admission to Stern or Touro very early in the last year of high school and get accepted to their joint program; and you are required to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) immediately after January 1st.  Your acceptance into a joint program and the FAFSA application, which is reviewed by governmental agencies, not Tiferet or the colleges, determines your eligibility for the following tuition assistance programs: (The maximum Grant amounts may be 10-15% lower in 2011-12 because of the Federal budget.)

  • Federal Pell Grant - The Pell Grant is administered and funded by the federal government and in the 2010/2011 school year, provided grants ranging from $400 up to $5,550 per year towards the educational expenses of eligible students. Eligibility is determined by a formula set by Congress and is based on information reported in the FAFSA.
  • New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) - TAP provides grants for students who are legal residents of New York State. In the 2010/2011 school year, TAP provided grants ranging from $200 up to $4,925 per year to eligible students. Awards are determined by the amount of parents’ net taxable New York State income (gross income less all exemptions and deductions).
  • Federal Stafford Loan Program - The Federal Stafford Loan Program makes loan funds available to college students for financing their education. The loan limit for Dependant Students is $5,500 (up to $3,500 subsidized).

ADDITIONAL  TUITION  ASSISTANCE  SOURCES

  • MASA - A joint program of the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency, MASA provides $1,000 grants to every student attending Tiferet for the entire year. A needs-based grant for an additional $2,700 is also available through a supplemental application which is based upon a “gross” income limitation of $22,500 per family member as shown on the 2010 tax return.  Examples: If there are 6 dependents listed on your tax return and the family earns less than $135,000 gross, or if you have 3 dependents and the family earns less than $67,500 gross, you are eligible for the additional needs-based grant.  MASA does not take in account any deductions from gross income in determining eligibility.
  • NCSY- If your daughter has participated in NCSY programs, she may be eligible for grants ranging from $250 to $1,500, depending upon your local chapter’s criteria and its financial resources.
  • UJA-Federation/Jewish Community Centers - We have seen awards ranging from $500 to $1,500 from the student’s local Federation affiliate for the year in Israel.
  • Synagogues - While it may be rare, we have seen awards of up to $1,000 for the year.
  • Alisa Flatow Memorial Scholarship Fund – a limited number of scholarships are awarded every year.
  • Family Assistance (relatives) and Student Self-help (summer jobs)

Tiferet will guide you through the MASA process once you are enrolled and we will assist you with the joint programs, but you must research all sources directly or through their websites.

Most importantly…apply for all scholarships EARLY!

PACKING LIST

To see a "suggested" list of things to bring, and NOT to bring, to Tiferet click here.

MEDICAL INSURANCE PLAN
Tiferet requires that all students purchase an emergency medical insurance plan selected by the school; this is a comprehensive network of English-speaking doctors and specialists who provide top private medical care. An upgrade to this plan is available for a moderate additional fee. Information will be sent to all students and parents after Pesach.

Please note that this insurance plan is valid only in Israel and does not cover pre-existing conditions, so do not cancel your current insurance coverage.

MOBILE  PHONE  RENTAL

Each year Tiferet selects a specific cell phone provider.  All students are required to be part of this plan so that the administration can quickly reach all of its students simultaneously with any important information.

Signing your daughter up with our designated cellphone provider ensures that we at Tiferet can instantly communicate with her with important text messages, which she will not readily receive if she has a different mobile phone.  Flexible plans are available depending on your usage.
